iiG research teams from Kenya and Uganda held a half-day workshop in Kampala, Uganda to disseminate preliminary results and to invite discussion of related experiences from government, civil society, and academics. Audience members included Ugandan academics, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Finance, and the Parliamentary Budget Office.
The workshop provided a forum for discussion of experiences on the specific theme of the strengthening of School Management Committees in order to improve education outcomes. Invited presentations were given by iiG implementing partners, the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) and World Vision, who discussed experiences from related projects, sharing the theme of empowering community-based management of schools.
On behalf of the iiG education project in Kenya, Justin Sandefur (CSAE) presented results from that project’s baseline survey.
Frederick Mugisha (EPRC) and Andrew Zeitlin (CSAE) presented baseline results and design issues from the iiG project in Uganda.
Taken together, the presentations and discussion highlighted evidence that there exists considerable scope for impacts on education outcomes from community-based monitoring, but that a wide range of means to strengthen institutions of local monitoring were available and in need of empirical testing.
